Picture. A white woman with blonde hair and glasses looking out from a Norwegian stave church.

Welcome!

Hi there! My name's Meg, and I'm the artist and researcher behind Women of 1000 AD. On this website, you can experience the stories of women from all over the world who lived a thousand years ago. They saw the same moon and the same sun every day while living in incredibly diverse societies. Have a look around and discover their stories!

Picture. A Black woman with thin golden chains hanging down from a headdress over her body sits astride a horse. She is looking appraisingly at a young Black woman sitting on a camel, who returns her gaze. The woman on the horse has elaborate jewellery, and her horse is decorated with silver and gold. The woman on the camel is wrapped in a colourful headscarf. Behind them are dunes in the sun.

Picture. A Persian woman reclines on an ornate wooden bench with cushions. She is wearing gold jewellery and colourfully embroidered tunic, trousers, and socks with slippers. A Saluki dog sits below her on a red and gold carpet decorated with horses and elk. The wall is decorated with mosaics and painted stucco. Two large windows open out onto a view of mountains covered in trees. A brass brazier burns in the corner over a tiled floor. Small blue stained glass squares cast reflections on the floor.

Picture. Four Indigenous Caribbean women are playing a ballgame on a court of packed earth. The black rubber ball is contested between two women, one naked and the other wearing a red belt and white skirt. Two other women can be seen in the foreground from behind, one with a skirt and one naked with a headband. Behind them on a grassy embankment, eight people of varying ages and genders cheer on the game. Rooftops can be seen behind them, and mountains and a river in the distance.
